Know hematohidrosis, the phenomenon of blood sweating

Hematohidrosis or also called hematidrosis is a condition where a person can sweat blood. This condition is very rare. Although it may seem terrible, hematohidrosis has not been proven to be life-threatening. Patients with hematohidrosis will sweat blood, or blood appears from the pores of their skin, even though they are not injured. Cases like this are very rare, and the cause of this complaint is also still not clearly known. One case of hematohidrosis has ever been reported in a girl in India. A series of medical examinations are then carried out to detect this abnormality. However, apparently no abnormalities were found in the body of the child. She also has no history of surgery, no family history of hematohidrosis, and has a normal menstrual cycle.

Causes of hematohidrosis

Not much information is known about hematohidrosis due to the scarcity of this disease. Allegedly, hematohidrosis is caused by bleeding in capillaries that drain blood into the sweat glands. Capillaries are small blood vessels located in body tissue. Its function is to carry important nutrients throughout the body. Normally, the body produces chemicals such as the hormones cortisol and adrenaline, to prepare the body for threats. The release of cortisol and adrenaline makes the body more energized and alert. But in patients with hematohidrosis, this self-defense reaction triggers capillary rupture. As a result, blood comes out through the sweat glands from broken blood vessels. This could possibly be triggered by high blood pressure, severe stress, emotional stress, or extreme fatigue. In addition, there are other factors that are thought to cause hematohidrosis. The first is the discharge of menstrual blood not from the uterus. The second is psychogenic purpura, a condition in which there is sudden bleeding without injury or bruising. But all these allegations still need further research.

Symptoms of hematohidrosis

The most obvious symptom of hematohidrosis is blood sweat coming from the skin pores. This condition can occur in any part of the body, but most commonly occurs on the face. Blood can also come out of the mucosal lining, such as from the mouth and nose. The skin around the area that is bleeding may experience temporary swelling. Sufferers can also become dehydrated. Although it may seem terrible, hematohidrosis has not proven dangerous. The blood that comes out will stop by itself.

How to treat hematohidrosis

Hematohidrosis is not life-threatening. But the blood that comes out of the surface of the skin must be very disturbing and affect the appearance. In addition, patients with hematohidrosis may also need to do a series of examinations such as physical examination and support in the form of liver, kidney, urine, ultrasound, and endoscopic function tests. If it turns out the test results do not indicate any abnormalities and the patient is feeling stressed, the doctor may suggest therapy to control stress so that hematohidrosis does not appear. To stop the bleeding, the doctor will treat the triggering factors, such as stress or high blood pressure. Patients with hematohidrosis may be given the following drugs:
  • Antidepressant medication to relieve depression.
  • Medicines to help blood clots.
  • Medication to reduce high blood pressure.
If there are complaints of bloody sweat, you are advised to consult a doctor to get further examination and treatment.
